The 1970s are famous for bell-bottoms and the rise of disco. Of course, who can forget the bell-bottoms pants they are the reason the 1970s continue to be one of the most stylish decades of all time. Many of our present clothing styles are inspired by the 1970s.
The 1970s began with a continuation of the hippie look from the 1960s. Popular early 1970s fashions for women included Tie-dye shirts, Indian block-print bedspread dresses Mexican ‘peasant’ blouses, folk-embroidered Hungarian blouses, ponchos, capes, and military surplus clothing. Bottom attire for women during this time included bell-bottoms, gauchos, frayed jeans, short skirts, and ankle-length maxi dresses.
By the mid-1970s, skirts got shorter, boots got taller. Girls’ clothes transitioned from costume-like hippie garb to styles influenced by disco party dresses, evening wear, and the preppie look. Flares and bell sleeves to shearling coats and miniskirts, the era birthed an eclectic mix of style influences that evolved quickly over the 10 years.
