Sky News has reported that UEFA will convene an emergency meeting this week to formulate a united response to this contentious issue. The controversy stems from FIFA’s plan to establish FIFA Forward Enterprise, valued at $20 billion, with the intention of selling over 20% to external investors to generate $4.2 billion. One of the prominent investor groups is Thrive Eternal, headed by Josh Kushner, who has ties to Donald Trump’s family.
UEFA has strongly condemned this move, asserting in an official statement, ‘This transgresses a boundary that institutions should never cross. The essence and governance of football are not marketable assets. Football does not belong to FIFA to put up for sale.
While Infantino justifies this decision by promising to increase development funding for member associations from $8 million to $20 million, European countries are exploring the possibility of using the threat of withdrawal as a bargaining tool. UEFA is confident that its strong influence will help prevent this project, as it did with the biennial World Cup plan.
